Comeback

Celebrating the remarkable decision for a comeback :

To the field I left a decade and a half ago
To the city I briefly swooped in ten years ago
To the true blue joy and faith that life can be beautiful and meaningful
To the belief that only Love is real.

Love does not judge between the poor and the rich. Only human eyes do. Power does not always corrupt, humans just need to understand how to wield it the right way.
人之初,性本善 – if we can all guide people to get back to the basics of Love for the world and fellow human beings and all other beings, we can really do big and good things.

Great words. They ring true to me.

  2. Thank you for the photos. Not exactly sure where you were shooting from (near the US embassy?), but I recognize a few old haunts. In PP4, I think the childrens’ hospital (Kantha Bopha) is just peeking out from the building to the right, and Hopital Calumet (spent some time as a patient there) is up on the left, by the French Embassy grounds and UNICEF’s new digs in the big black building (also in PP5). PP3, looking out over the market and past the palace grounds to the left, I lived in the area around the Russian Embassy for several months in 2002. Astounding how much the city has changed!

It’s a new building that looks like a rubbish chute! https://www.vattanaccapital.com/about
Pretty unbelievable how even the island right in the middle of the river is also built up. Apparently there is going to be this 62-storey building which is already under construction https://www.phnompenhpost.com/supplements-post-property/royal-group-inks-deal-chinese-contractor-build-royal-one and another 133-storey one that has been approved (?!x-x?!) Gasp!!!!!! https://www.khmertimeskh.com/50115187/initial-construction-work-for-twin-towers-begins/
Part of the reason why I bothered taking so many pics is because – (1. show you what it looks like now;) and 2. document what it looks like while it still retains some form of sanity in its development/urbanization.

      1. Got it! Yeah… just over from the US Embassy. I remember seeing the building a couple of years back. “Dragon’s back” vs. “rubbish chute”. I’m an architectural Philistine, so I’ll have to concede any debate to the experts. However, the Chinese project looks a little over-the-top for my tastes. 😉

Now that I’m oriented, PP2 looks out toward the old Steung Meanchey dump (since closed), and PP7 toward the airport. I spent most of my time in 2002 out toward the airport at the Cambodia Trust School of Prosthetics and Orthotics, working on my second graduate project (which was a disaster). It was mostly farmland then… not even entirely de-mined. The vacant land in PP6 used to be a lake called “Boeung Kak” with some laid-back developments along its shoreline. I recall it as a nice area.

I noticed the development spreading onto the island/peninsula. If anyone had said to me back then that PP would look this way in sixteen-years, I’d have told them they were nuts. Makes me wonder about the next decade.
